The Benefits of Spray Foam Insulation

Categories:

When sprayed in a home, attic insulation can fill the space between walls, floors and attics creating an air barrier that blocks convective heat transfer between the interior of your home and the outside environment. This will help cut down on your heating and cooling costs significantly.

The material itself, which is actually 2 composite materials, polyurethane and isocyanate are sprayed from a special gun where they react to expand in place and form a protective layer of insulation. Unlike fiberglass batts or cellulose, spray foam insulation doesn’t compress or sag and will last for as long as your building does.

Eco-Friendly Advantages of Spray Foam Insulation

It’s also environmentally safe, which is something not all builders can say. As of January 1, 2021, all spray foam manufacturers in Canada are required to switch to climate-safe blowing agents that will not add to global warming.

Lastly, spray foam insulation is more durable than other insulation materials. It will not sag or settle, and it is more resistant to mold and moisture. In the end, if you choose a good builder who uses high-quality spray foam, the upfront investment will pay for itself over time in lower bills and less maintenance.

One drawback to spray foam insulation is that anything that it adheres to will eventually be sent to a landfill. Wood studs are recyclable, plywood is reusable and rigid foam boards can be reused but whatever they are stuck to will probably end up in a trash pile at the end of its life.
