Shops called Fun Guyz, Shroom City and House of Mushroom are popping up across the country, offering pills, dried fungi and chocolate bars containing the drug. The stores, which usually operate illegally because the sale and possession of magic mushrooms are banned in Canada, have been raided frequently and their merchandise confiscated by police officers. But they reopen quickly after replacing the seized products.

The storefronts are hard to miss, with psychedelic art like rainbow shiitakes adorning the windows and inviting passersby to “walk into a new reality.” At Dana Larsen’s Toronto dispensary, she welcomes customers to “the experience of life in its fullest.”

But police officers descended on the Montreal location of Fun Guyz after it opened Tuesday afternoon, shutting the door and arresting four people. It was the second raid in less than three weeks for the store, which also has franchises in Ontario.

Fun Guyz’s owners say they have no plans to close and have been campaigning for the legalization of psilocybin, which they claim has therapeutic effects on mental health. They say their business model mirrors that of cannabis, which has become a mainstream consumer product. But it is difficult to argue with the police officers who have raided the store and arrested its employees for selling a banned substance.
